2015 TMRWC Board Meeting Minutes

September 2015

Minutes of the Ten Mile River Watershed Council’s Member Meeting, held September 3rd 2015 at Newman Church.


Members in attendance were: Ben Cote, Bob Rolke, Keith Gonsalves, Alissa Cote, Cindy Rose, Audrey Walsh, Linda Webber, Joyce Chamberlain, Vickie Richards, Ryan Cote.


Guests in attendance were: Jason Skinner, Jennifer Russo.


Ben called the meeting to order at 6:34 PM.


Linda made a motion to approve the May minutes, it was 2nd by Bob.


Cindy gave a business report. She reported that seven new members had joined the Council in 2015. Joyce made a motion to approve, it was 2nd by Keith.


Ben reported on the following past events: National Trails day, Flag Day Paddle, Summer Solstice Hike, Roger Williams Paddle, Ribbon Cutting for the fish ladders, and River Clearing at Slater Park. Ben stated that for the most part, all of the events were a success.


Ben reported that the application for the Rhode Island Rivers Council has been completed and sent in. The River Council will vote on designation at their November meeting.


Ben reported that the City of East Providence and the Council have worked out a deal for the firefighter grounds at Hunts Mills. The Council will now have storage and will work toward creating headquarters at the site. Keith suggested that the Council rent equipment to clear the area around the building. He volunteered to do the work. The Council agreed.


Ben reported that the Greenway Stewardship Program is going well. Joyce suggested getting a trash barrel at the Kim Rock section.  Ben suggested posted sign up sheets along the Greenway. The Council agreed and will discuss it further in 2016.


Bob stated that there will be a tire cleanup on September 12th. It will be a boat cleanup. We will be meeting at 9:30 at the Pawtucket Country Club and cleaning upriver.


Ben stated that the Harvest Moon Walk will be on September 27th. We will be meeting at the Turner Loop Trail at 7:00 PM. Information has been sent to all local newspapers. Ben reported that the East Providence Land Conservation Trust is onboard to co-host. Alissa suggested that we provide apple cider as in the past. The Council agreed.


Ben reported that the Members Picnic will be held on October 4th at Hunts Mills. It will be a potluck. Ben stated that there will be a Yankee Swap as usual. Joyce suggested upping the limit to $10.00 Ben suggested that we hold a ribbon cutting after the picnic to officially open the new building. Cindy suggested the Council purchase a grill for this and other events. The Council agreed.

Audrey made a motion to adjourn at 7:55 Pm, it was 2nd by Bob.

May 2015

Minutes of the TMRWC Board of Directors Meeting held on May 21, 2015 at Newman Church.

Members in attendance were: Ben Cote, Bob Rolke, Keith Gonsalves, Alissa Cote, Cindy Rose, Linda Webber, Bill Luther, Victoria Richards, Ryan Cote, Deb Gonsalves, Joyce Chamberlain, Alex Kemp, Don Doucette, Nancy Doucette, Glen Northrup.

Guests in attendance were: Laura ?, Susan Barnes.

Ben called the meeting to order at 6:32 PM and welcomed new members and guests.

Bob made a motion to approve the March minutes with one correction on attendance, it was 2nd by Linda.

Cindy gave a business report. She informed the Council that 2 new members had joined and also reported on grant money received for Spring events. Keith made a motion to approve, it was 2nd by Alissa.

Ben reported on the following past events: Fish Count Training, Central Pond Cleanup, and Vernal Pool Monitoring. Ben suggested that we expand the Vernal Pool Monitoring next year, possibly involving the Elks Club. The Council agreed.

Keith reported that the Omega Fish Ladder is complete and that there is a ribbon cutting planned for June 15th.

Ben reported that he will fill out the application for the Rhode Island Rivers Council in the summer.

Alex reported that the Greenway Stewardship is going well. He suggested that we change the wording of the signs. The Council agreed.

Ben reported that the City of East Providence is requiring that the Council get insurance in order to take over the building at Hunts Mills. He suggested that Keith join him in doing whatever is needed to get the building. The Council agreed.

Keith reported that he received 2000 rubber ducks for a 2016 duck race. He suggested filling out an application for fund raising in early 2016. The Council agreed.

Ben reported that the Attleboro Cleanup will be on May 27, which is Memorial Day Weekend. Don Doucette stated that he will attend. Ben and Alex also agreed to represent the Council.

Ben reported that National Trails Day will be June 6th. The Council received a $500 grant for trail improvements. The Council will be partnering with the East Providence Conservation Commission, Rumford Lions, and Providence County Hiking Club. Ben suggested that the Council provide a picnic at the event. The Council agreed to provide Tacos in a Bag and Calzones.

Keith reported that the Father’s Day Paddle will now be a Flag Day Paddle because of schedule conflicts and will be held on June 14, at 10:00. Bob suggested paddling up and back from Pawtucket Country Club to avoid a car shuttle. There will be a $5.00 charge for non-members The Council agreed.

Ben reported that Summer Solstice will be on June 20th at 6:30 PM and will follow the usual route from Seekonk Library.

Keith reported that the Roger Williams Paddle will be July 11, at 9:00 AM and will follow the usual route from Freedom Green into Providence. He will be in contact with John McNiff in the coming weeks. There will be a $10.00 charge for non-members.

Ben suggested having a river clearing event in Slater Park on August 23rd. The Council agreed.

Ben reported that the next meeting will be our Members Meeting on September 3, at 6:30 PM at Newman Church. The 2016 Board of Directors will be elected at this meeting.

March 2015

Minutes of the TMRWC Board of Directors Meeting held on March 26, at Newman Church.

 

Members in Attendance were: Ben Cote, Bob Rolke, Cindy Rose, Linda Webber, Audrey Walsh, Dave Pouliot, Alissa Cote, Keith Gonsalves, Ryan Cote, Vicky Richards, Alex Kemp, Bill Luther, Don Doucette.

Guests in Attendance were: Joyce Chamberlain, Euginia Marks.

Ben called the meeting to order at 6:34.

Euginia Marks from RI Audubon spoke about fishing line disposal. The Council thanked her for her time and agreed to look into implementing that on the river.

Bob made a motion to approve the January minutes, it was 2nd by Linda.

Cindy gave a business report. It was reported that 4 members had joined. Keith made a motion to approve, it was 2nd by Alissa.

Ben reviewed the following past events: the RI Fishing Show and Land and Water Summit. Ben stated that the Sunrise Walk on the Greenway was canceled due to trail conditions.

Alex spoke about a seminar he attended in Pawtucket about controlling geese population. He stated that other events will be held in the near future. The Council agreed to take part.

Ben reported that he has attended meetings with the Pawtucket Planning Department about boat access at Pawtucket Country Club. Plans are in place and construction is expected to begin soon.

Keith reported that the fish ladders will be completed by the spring run.

Ben suggested starting the application for the Rhode Island Rivers Council in the summer so that it would be completed by the fall. The Council agreed.

Alex reported that he has been removing graffiti from signs on the Greenway. Bill suggested getting better equipment for the Stewards. Joyce suggested having two stewards per mile instead of one. The Council agreed.

The Council discussed fund raising ideas. Ben stated that the Council would have to get a permit for any fund raising activities. Some ideas discussed were a bake sale, raffle, and duck race. Don Doucette suggested that we scout out other duck races in the area to get an idea of how they are run. Keith brought up the idea of getting a corporate sponsor, possibly Benny’s. Ben will write a letter.

Keith reported that there will be training for fish counters at Hunts Mills on March 29th.

Bob reported that there will be a Central Pond Cleanup on April 19th at 9:30. We will have a boat crew and land crew. Cindy volunteered to supply water and sandwiches. Ben stated that the Council received a $250.00 grant for the cleanup. Some supplies will be purchased for the Greenway Stewards.

Ben reported that the Annual Attleboro Cleanup will be May 23rd. The Council will possibly be working in the Bungay River area. Audrey suggested getting Boy Scouts involved. More details will be worked out at the May meeting.

Ben reported that he has been in contact with the East Providence Planning Department about using the Fire Fighter Shed for storage. The City stated that it looks promising, it just has to pass the legal department. Ben stated that the Council received a $500.00 grant for  improvements at Hunts Mills for National Trails Day. More details will be worked out at the May meeting.

Bob made a motion to adjourn at 8:00. It was 2nd by Cindy.

January 2015

Minutes of the TMRWC Board of Directors Meeting held on January 15, 2015 at Newman Church.

Members in attendance were: Ben Cote, Bob Rolke, Alissa Cote, Keith Gonsalves, Linda Webber, Dave Pouliot, Bill Luther, Alex Kemp, Vicky Richards, Ryan Cote, Jack Tobin, Christine Tobin, Deb Gonsalves.

Ben called the meeting to order at 6:31 PM and welcomed new members Jack and Christine Tobin.

Alissa read the September minutes. Bob made a motion to approve, it was 2nd by Linda.

In Cindy’s absence, Ben gave a business report and proposed the 2015 budget. Keith made a motion to approve, it was 2nd by Dave.

Ben reviewed the following past events: Harvest Moon Walk, Members Picnic, Central Pond Cleanup, Holiday Walk with the Providence County Hiking Club.

Ben reported that the 501 C3 status was approved and that the Council is now tax exempt.

Keith reported that work on the Omega Fish Ladder is ongoing and is expected to be finished by March.

Keith reported that the Salt Water Fishing Show will be February 27, 28 and March 1 at the RI Convention Center.

Ben reported that we missed the deadline for the Rhode Island Rivers Council and that we should try again for the fall. The Council agreed.

Ben reported that the Greenway Stewardship Program is off to a promising start. He stated that the Council will try to double the size of the effort this year.

Ben reported that trail work at Hunts Mills has begun and will continue into the spring. Ben suggested holding an event at Hunts Mills on National Trails Day rather than the Turner Loop. The Council agreed. More details will be worked out.

Bob reported that there will be a cleanup of Central Pond on April 19. This will be a boat cleanup. More details will be worked out.

Ben reported that he has been in contact with the Attleboro Conservation Agent on the Attleboro Cleanup. He suggested that the Council partner with the city on the cleanup this year. The Council agreed. More details will be worked out.

Ben reported that Father’s Day and Summer Solstice fall on the same day this year. He suggested that the Council hold the Father’s Day Paddle on Father’s Day and that we hold the Summer Solstice Hike a few days early on the Friday before. The Council agreed. More details will be worked out.

Ben reported that there will be a 7 mile Sunrise Walk on March 15. This walk will be held with the Providence County Hiking Club. It will begin at 6:15 am at Kim Rock. Ben will send the information to the newspapers. No snacks will be provided.

Bob made a motion to adjourn at 7:38 PM, it was 2nd by Linda.

The next meeting will be held on March 19, at Newman Church.
